Effective Communication
Almost every CV highlights the ability of the writer to communicate effectively. It's a given! We affirm communication as a core competency then take it for granted in much the same way as we do breathing. We can define the characteristics of good communication yet rarely spend time examining the effectiveness and appropriateness of the communication habits we have developed over a lifetime. Common practice often falls short of common sense because we lack awareness of how our communication styles are impacting those with whom we engage.
Alex Sutherland of Lines of Sight has had a 20 year association with the ABCs of Win-Win Relationships, a programme developed by Dr Irwin Rubin of Temenos Inc.
What do the ABCs offer?
This is an interactive workshop that provides a practical framework for creating and sustaining high quality interpersonal relationships through effective communications. The strength of the ABC Model is in its focus on:
Awareness - providing an opportunity to become more conscious of current communication styles and how these might enhance or limit the quality of our engagement with others.
Behaviours - reinforcing the ability to access a range of communication behaviours that can be used skilfully and flexibly.
Consequences - introducing a framework for anticipating, planning for and tracking significant conversations.
The starting point
A unique feature of the ABCs programme is the Temenos online Behaviour Minder, an instrument which assesses current communication behaviours. The value of this feedback is that it is:
Relationship specific, not generic
Owned, not anonymous
Focuses on observable and therefore changeable behaviours
Positive and forward-focused, providing specific suggestions for enhancing interactions with each respondent.
Why use ABCs?
The ABCs programme is a valuable tool for individuals who take the effectiveness of their communication for granted. Personalised feedback from colleagues prior to and during the workshop is used to foster a top-of-mind approach to communication.
Using work-related scenarios, the workshop provides an opportunity to:
Choose appropriate behaviours in anticipation of desired meeting outcomes
Monitor and review behaviour usage and the consequences of choices made in practice interactions
Test alternative approaches based on on-the-spot feedback
Explore and test options when there isn't time to plan
Prepare for follow-up conversations with Behaviour Minder respondents.
